Families of circus artists backstage and in the arena, lonely swimmers in the pools, people sleeping on bare ground, dancing couples. Katarzyna Karpowicz tells stories about people – distant and suspended in their worlds like in soap bubbles. The beauty of these little scenes is essential, but regardless of the motif, what absorbs the audience’s attention most is the reflective atmosphere of each painting – every single character has got their own psychological study. The young painter combines her experience and intuition with the history of painting – with an eye on the old masters she tests herself against the themes they used. In her paintings there is that sadness of Picasso’s Blue Period, Balthus’s nostalgia and love of youthfulness, and the timelessness of biblical landscapes.
