Marian Pankowski
Marian Pankowski (born November 9, 1919, in Sanok – died April 3, 2011, in Brussels) was a Polish writer, poet, translator, and professor of literature. He studied Polish philology at the Jagiellonian University and, after the war, continued his education in Belgium, where he taught Polish literature at the University of Brussels.

Pankowski’s work is a literary rollercoaster: provocative, corporeal, at times blasphemous, and always uniquely his own. He blended grotesque with lyricism, flesh with spirit, and sacred with profane – all with a flair that captivated some and scandalized others. His prose often balanced on the edge of moral subversion and poetic confession, his language like a whisper of a confessor mixed with a street actor’s shout.
One day, he stopped in front of our gallery window, having noticed Golgotha – a sculpture by Leszek Jasiński. He stepped inside to learn more about the artist. He was shaken – he sensed how much he shared with the sculptor: a painful verism, an approach to religious themes. I asked him to write something for us – anything.
A month later, he sent us a text. Written on a library index card. Short. Essential. Priceless.
Awards and distinctions: Kościelski Foundation Award (1962), Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2008).
