For Julia Medyńska, painting is a kind of performance. She transfers the experience she has acquired while acting in theatre and on film sets into paintings. She builds the mood of her scenes with dramatic gesture, light, and colour. She mixes horror with black humour and melds beauty and darkness into one.
Her painterly compositions are as if taken out of Baroque altar settings, featuring lush still lifes, bizarre objects straight out of a cabinet of curiosities, evidently inspired by the art of the old masters –Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Artemis Gentileschi – yet they retain an individual and contemporary character.
