Touch

The tone of Magdalena Sawicka’s drawings is personal; the artist herself declares  that there is no such thing as a communal sensitivity; each person has their own experiences, thoughts, feelings; and even when she draws inspiration from the global internet community, she interprets the existing interpretations.

A man and a beast. An innocent subject?

The latest exhibition of Katarzyna Karpowicz’s works revolves around her most favourite subjects and themes. The unpretentious title of ‘Man and Beast’ says a lot, but not everything.

Karpowicz goes back to the issue of the duality of animal and human nature. In her oneiric paintings a lion, bear or even a cat that resembles an innocent mascot are friends, guardians and protectors. This dormant state may, however, conceal a threat or the hidden instinct of a killer or demon, just like in the fairytales by the Brothers Grimm. The narrative paintings ‘Mushroom Picker’ and ‘Hunting’ are fairylike and full of tension. Demons openly reveal themselves in the series of paintings called ‘Wars’, conspicuously described by the titles and the atmosphere. They bear a strong resemblance to Goya’s War Demons. More expressive and sketchy, they demonstrate Karpowicz’s search for both new themes and innovative means of expression. Apart from that, there are circus scenes and pictures of people walking their dogs. A man and a beast. An innocent subject. Seemingly innocent. These paintings don’t always give a direct answer to whether it is all about changing roles – about the human face of a beast and the bestiality of man.
