Her work reflects the fascination of a Northerner with the South. The favourite subjects of her paintings are Venetian carnival, Greek peasant women and black women with children. Mediterranean customs are portrayed with a cold distance. Painted hard, ruthlessly with a distinctive outline and a smooth contrasting background. Instead of Southern joy of life there is the rigidity of the North, instead of lightness – weight and sturdiness. The Mediterranean world has stopped and thickened in Castellini’s paintings.
